Australian study has found that person suffering from high blood pressure can reduce their blood pressure by consuming garlic supplements every day. The study has also indicated that garlic a day is as effective in controlling hypertension as with medications.


High blood pressure (High BP) is also known as a silent killer as the disease mostly goes undetected. Blame it on the lifestyle or the junk food habits this diseases is slowly affecting large number of people throughout the world. Undiagnosed, uncontrolled high BP can cause vital organs to malfunction. Heart attacks, Strokes, Kidney failure are some of the bad effects of High BP.


Once diagnosed with high blood pressure doctors usually prescribe medications along with tips such as reducing weight, exercise regularly and lowering daily salt consumption.


BMC Cardiovascular Disorders journal features this study conducted by Dr. Karin Ried, Lead author of the study and his team from the University of Adelaide, South Australia. The research is based on analysis of patients suffering from high BP and those who consumed garlic daily for 12 to 23 weeks. Garlic contains a principle active ingredient called Allicin, about 5 to 9 mg of Allicin is present in a fresh clove of garlic.


The researches found that blood pressure reduced significantly for those who consumed garlic supplements daily. The effects according to the study were nearly similar to that achieved by drug therapy.


Researches feel that more study need to be done to find out the long term effect of garlic in controlling blood pressure as well as its effect on Cardiovascular Diseases.


Garlic is already considered a natural antibiotics and is used to treat colds, flu, sore throat and for lowering cholesterol.
